Bay or bow: what’s the difference?

Bay and bow windows both project out from the wall of your house. That brings in more daylight, opens up the view and gives you a little extra floor space inside. The difference is in the shape.

  • Bay windows usually have a flat centre window with a window either side, angled back to the wall. Some bays are square, with the side windows at right angles. You’ll see them on Victorian and Edwardian houses, 1930s semis and bungalows.
  • Bow windows use four or more windows of the same width, set at gentle angles so they form a soft curve. They suit wider openings and give a rounded, softer look.

Not sure which you have, or which would suit your home? We’ll explain the options on a free home visit.

Made to measure

No two bays are quite the same, so every bay and bow window we fit is made to measure. We survey the opening carefully, and the new frames are made to match its size and angles.

Many older bays help support the wall or roof above them. That’s one reason a proper survey matters before any work starts, and we’ll talk you through what your bay needs.

Colours, glass and finishing touches

You can have your new bay or bow window in white, in a colour or in a woodgrain finish. Our own work includes crisp white bays and rich rosewood ones, so you can match the rest of your windows or give the front of your home a new look.

  • Georgian bars for a traditional, divided-pane look, like the white bay at the top of this page.
  • Leaded glass, such as the diamond pattern above, for a cottage or period feel.
  • Openers where you need them, such as top-opening windows for fresh air, with fixed panes elsewhere.

Warm, secure and easy to look after

A bay or bow window has a lot of glass, so good windows make a real difference to how warm the room feels. All the uPVC windows we install are A-rated, and modern weather seals keep out draughts and rain.

Yale locks come as standard, and as Yale approved installers we can offer a 10-year Yale guarantee. uPVC frames never need painting: a wipe with a damp cloth now and then keeps them looking good.

We’re FENSA registered, so your new windows are registered and you get a certificate showing they meet Building Regulations.

Questions about bay and bow windows

What’s the difference between a bay and a bow window?

A bay window usually has a flat centre window with a window either side, set at an angle back to the wall. A bow window uses four or more windows of the same width at gentle angles, so it forms a soft curve. Both project out from the wall.

Can you replace my existing bay window?

Yes. We survey your bay and the new frames are made to measure to fit it. Older bays often help carry the wall or roof above, so we look at how yours is built on the free home visit and explain what the job involves.

What colours and finishes can I choose?

Bay and bow windows can be fitted in white, in colours or in woodgrain finishes, with options such as Georgian bars or leaded glass. Visit our showroom or book a free home visit and we’ll help you choose.

Will I get a FENSA certificate?

Yes. We’re FENSA registered, so your replacement windows are registered and you receive a certificate showing they meet Building Regulations.

How much does a new bay or bow window cost?

Every bay is different, so we price each job individually. Call 01424 239023 to arrange a free survey and a no-obligation written quote.
