What is secondary glazing?
Secondary glazing is a separate, slim glazed panel fitted on the inside of your existing window. Your original window stays exactly as it is, and the new panel sits within the window opening, with a gap of air between the two.
It’s a practical choice when replacing your windows isn’t possible, or simply isn’t what you want.
Who is it for?
- Listed buildings and conservation areas, where you may want, or need, to keep the original windows.
- Period homes with original sash or timber windows that you’d like to keep.
- Flats, where the outside windows may be the building’s responsibility. Check your lease or ask your managing agent first.
- Homes on busy roads, where outside noise is the main problem.
Hastings and St Leonards have a lot of Victorian and older homes, and some still have their original windows. Secondary glazing lets you keep them and still make the rooms more comfortable.
Warmer, quieter rooms
The extra layer of glass and the air gap between the two windows help keep the heat in and cut the draughts that come through old frames. That means rooms that feel warmer and rely less on the heating.
The air gap also helps reduce outside noise, which can make a real difference in a bedroom facing a busy road. And because the panel is fitted on the inside, the outside of your home looks just the same as before.
Styles to suit each window
Secondary glazing comes in several styles, and we’ll recommend the right one for each window:
- Sliding panels, horizontal or vertical, so you can still open the window behind and reach it for cleaning.
- Hinged panels, which open like a door.
- Fixed or lift-out panels, for windows you rarely open.
Every panel is made to measure, so it fits neatly inside the window opening. The work is done from inside your home, and your original windows are left as they are. It’s worth making sure they’re in reasonable condition first, so we’ll look at them with you on the free survey.
Listed buildings and planning
Secondary glazing doesn’t change the outside of your home, which is why it’s often used on listed buildings and in conservation areas. Even so, listed building rules can cover changes inside as well as out, so check with your local council before work starts. We’re happy to help with planning and building work questions.

Is secondary glazing the same as double glazing?
No. Double glazing replaces your window with a new one. Secondary glazing leaves your existing window in place and adds a separate glazed panel on the inside.
Can I have secondary glazing in a listed building?
It’s often chosen for listed buildings because the original windows stay in place. Listed building rules can still apply to changes inside, so check with your local council before work starts.
Can I still open my windows?
Yes, if you choose a sliding or hinged panel. You open the secondary panel first, then your original window behind it. Fixed panels suit windows you rarely need to open.
How much does secondary glazing cost?
It depends on the number, size and style of your windows, so we price each job individually. Call 01424 239023 to arrange a free home visit and a no-obligation written quote.
